Manchester City just won the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup with a stunning performance, beating Fluminense 4-0 in the final. It was the crowning moment for Pep Guardiola in a magical run of five titles that also included the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Now they want more.
Their roster is already impressive with names like Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Phil Foden or Jack Grealish. However, in order to dominate in the long term, a potential renewal must always be prepared.
This is why Claudio Echeverri has become Manchester City’s main target in recent weeks. The young star dazzled at the recent Under-17 World Cup with Argentina in Indonesia, especially when he scored a hat-trick in the quarter-final against Brazil.
Echeverri is contracted to River Plate until December 2024 but in a shock turn of events has already said the deal will not be extended. “I will not restore. I’ll continue for another six months or a year and then we’ll see what happens.”
In this scenario, Claudio Echeverri is free to negotiate with any club from next summer and will leave for free at the end of 2024 if River Plate fail to sell him. Big European clubs are therefore already considering him making significant offers.
According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have the upper hand in signing the young Argentine star and want to speed up the process to complete the deal as soon as possible. However, Chelsea are another Premier League team who could offer a significant amount of money.
FC Barcelona is another team interested in Claudio Echeverri, but the club’s current economic situation makes it virtually impossible for the player to end up in Spain.
Manchester City would have to pay at least $25 million to activate Claudio Echeverri’s release clause with River Plate. The alternative would be to pay that amount, secure the player and keep him on loan in Argentina until his Premier League debut.
