A number of Europe’s biggest clubs have reiterated their stance against the European Super League after the group behind the project confirmed plans to revive the competition.
A court ruled on Thursday that UEFA and FIFA’s threats to ban players and clubs from current competitions if they agreed to join the European Super League were against the law, meaning the governing bodies could not prevent the creation of the tournament.
However, the problem for the two clubs that remain in Super League support – Barcelona and Real Madrid – is that most of Europe’s elite have shunned the concept following immense fan backlash in 2021.
Here’s what the clubs had to say after Thursday’s decision.
Manchester United
“Our position has not changed. We remain fully committed to participating in UEFA competitions and working positively with UEFA, the Premier League and other clubs through the ECA to further develop the European game.”
Bayern Munich
“We have taken note of the judgment of the European Court of Justice. However, this does not change the position of FC Bayern and the ECA that such a competition would be an attack on the importance of national leagues and the structure of European football. However, this does not change the position of FC Bayern and the ECA that such a competition would the competition was an attack on the importance of national leagues and the structure of European football,” he said.
“The Bundesliga is the foundation of FC Bayern, just as all national leagues are the foundation of other European football clubs. It is therefore our duty and our deep belief to strengthen them, not weaken them. We are also committed to the European club competition under the auspices of UEFA. So let me be clear once again , that the door to the Super League remains closed at FC Bayern.”
Atletico Madrid
“The European Football Community does not support the European Super League. Germany, France, England, Italy, Spain (except Real Madrid and Barcelona) etc. are against the Super League. We advocate for the protection of the wider European football family and the preservation of the domestic league and ensuring qualification for European competitions through performance on the field every season.”
Borussia Dortmund
“Borussia Dortmund will examine the judgment of the European Court of Justice in detail as soon as we have the full reasons for the decision. However, we are already convinced that the conclusions that can be drawn from the judgment of the ECJ do not correspond to those currently circulating in the media.
“It is not for nothing that the ECJ made it clear in its press release that the decision does not mean that a competition such as the Superliga must necessarily be allowed. For Borussia Dortmund, regardless of the discussions surrounding the verdict: we are not available for the Superliga.”
Roma
“The club in no way supports any project of the so-called Super League, which would represent an unacceptable attack on the importance of national leagues and the foundations of European football.
“AS Roma believes that the future well-being of European football can only be ensured through the cooperation of clubs through the ECA in strong partnership and cooperation with UEFA and FIFA.”
PSG
“Paris Saint-Germain completely and utterly rejects any plans for the so-called Super League, which it has been from day one and always will be.
“As a proud European institution, PSG supports the principles of the European sporting model, the values of open competition and inclusion, and works with all the recognized stakeholders of European football – especially the fans and players at heart. soccer.”
Inter Milan
“FC Internazionale Milano reiterates its position that the future well-being of European football can only be ensured by clubs working together through the ECA, in partnership and cooperation with UEFA and FIFA.
“As a club we remain committed to the values that underpin the European sporting model and to working through the ECA alongside our partner clubs to promote these values.”
