Kylian Mbappe is still undecided about his future but is currently considering contract offers from Real Madrid and current club Paris Saint-Germain.

Kylian Mbappe’s future remains unresolved over his summer deal with PSG. Terms are widely agreed, but Kylian Mbappe has yet to give the go-ahead to PSG, who will now not change their renewal proposal, which has been on the table for some time.

PSG are increasingly pessimistic about their chances of keeping Kylian Mbappe, eyeing Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao as potential replacements. But they also know that Kylian Mbappe can change his mind very quickly and quite unpredictably, so all hope is not lost yet.

Sources have told 90min that PSG’s offer to Kylian Mbappe is worth €70m gross per year. They would also agree to pay back his €80m loyalty bonus, which was waived last summer after PSG gave a legally binding guarantee that they would not lose money if he left on a free, and rejected the option of a one-year renewal on his existing deal.

PSG have also agreed to let Mbappe play in the 2024 Paris Olympics with France if he signed up, despite the tournament starting in late July and finishing in mid-August. With Euro 2024 also this summer, it means Mbappe will be out for nearly three months when pre-tournament preparation, games and rest for both events are taken into account.

Madrid’s basic offer for Mbappe is significantly lower than PSG’s and the terms they have put forward are believed to be similar to the figures from their offer from 2022, when he last entered free agency – an annual salary worth no more than €30m plus a signing bonus of €130m euros, even though they haven’t given him the green light to play at the Olympics yet.

However, Madrid say these sums are without any additional incentives and contract bonuses, while there would be more commercial opportunities to play for them rather than in France with PSG. All-in, their offer could be close to PSG’s or even more lucrative in the long run due to Kylian Mbappe’s individual earning power.

It’s possible that Kylian Mbappe will use PSG’s offer as leverage to try to improve the basic terms of Madrid’s proposal, while he may also wait to see if a Premier League side enter the fray for his signature – Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with moves in the English press recently, though both clubs played down any talks.

Kylian Mbappe could also allow his PSG contract to expire and enter a free agency, allowing him to play for France at the Olympics and sort out his future later this summer.

His destination still remains the most likely to be Madrid on current form, but those at the Santiago Bernabeu also thought 2022 before he surprisingly turned around and signed a new contract with PSG. Because of this, Madrid president Florentino Perez has been actively involved in negotiations to try and complete a deal sooner rather than later, which is why we may see some clarity in the coming weeks when the January window closes.
