After coming out of the 2024 league opener with all three points, Inter Miami set out on a cross-country road trip and a short rest when they visit LA Galaxy on Sunday.
Lionel Messi was superb as ever as the Herons kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, but the performance was incredibly sloppy and only RSL’s own class was utterly disastrous to keep the scoreline from looking more worrying.
That will be unsustainable throughout the season and head coach Tata Martino will know he has his work cut out for him if Inter Miami are to live up to the club’s lofty expectations this season. That will be made all the more challenging when he knows he has the added task of keeping the club’s aging superstars in top form, choosing where to rest in a busy schedule.
The game is a homecoming of sorts for Inter Miami owner David Beckham as the Herons visit the Galaxy, his old club of five years, for the first time in the club’s history.
The Galaxy have had a tumultuous offseason with significant roster changes, especially up front. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez left the club in the offseason, leaving behind a largely disappointing MLS career to return to his home country of Mexico with boyhood club Chivas. Douglas Costa was also cut in the offseason, heading back to Brazil and Serie A giants Fluminense, while Billy Sharp was moved to English club Hull City and Michael Barrios left to join Colombian side CD America.
They were replaced by new Designated Player Joseph Paintsil from Belgium’s Genk, Gabriel Pec arrived from Brazilian club Vasco de Gama and MLS veteran Diego Fagundez was acquired from Austin FC.
