The Manchester derby took on a new dimension in the last two decades as Manchester City challenged Manchester United’s dominance in the Premier League era.
Their meeting in the FA Cup Final on 3 June was a landmark event, their first meeting in such a fixture, and ended in a 2-1 win for Pep Guardiola’s City en route to a treble that matched the 1998/1998/. 99 exploits.
As United collected a brilliant 13 Premier League titles between 1992 and 2013, City yoyoed between divisions before finally coming out on top.
The Abu Dhabi-backed buyout of City in 2008 transformed the club, both in its Mancunian rivalry and in its status as a European superpower, with a squad full of world-class players.
