On Tuesday night, Arsenal could only manage a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich during the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final at the Emirates Stadium.

The opening minutes they started evenly, with Arsenal having the first attempt on goal when Gabriel Martinelli fired just wide from the edge of the penalty area.

But they took the lead with the first goal attempt. Bukayo Saka, whose presence had already seen Alphonso Davies booked early on, stepped up before curling the ball past Manuel Neuer to give his side an early lead.

Ben White could have doubled their lead when he fired straight at Neuer in a good spot. It proved costly as they were pegged back moments later when ex-Arsenal man Serge Gnabry put David Raya through after Leon Goretzka slid in.

Bayern Munich then got a chance to take the lead ten minutes later when William Saliba brought down Leroy Sané after a mad run by the German. As he so often did for Tottenham, Harry Kane stepped up and rolled it into the corner, sending David Raya the wrong way.

Arsenal were far from their usual selves, with Sané in particular giving Jakub Kiwior plenty of trouble and going into the break with everything going in the second half.

The Polish defender did not come out in the second 45, Oleksandr Zinchenko replaced him at the break.

The home side again started on the front foot but could not find a way to break Bayern and test Neuer. At the other end, the Bavarian giants remained a threat as Gnabry fired over.

Mikel Arteta rang the changes with Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard.

It paid off a few minutes later when the Brazilian found his fellow substitute after a piece of fleet work led to Trossard firing over from his side level ahead of a pulsating final 15 minutes.

Both sides were pushing for a winner, with Kingsley Coman seeing his effort come back off the woodwork in the dying seconds.

In the fifth minute of injury time, Saka struggled with a challenge from Manuel Neuer, but the referee waved away the penalty appeal, leaving both sides wondering what could have happened at full-time.
