German giant Bayer Leverkusen are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga and leads the table by an impressive 13 points ahead of reigning champions Bayern Munich.
No side other than Bayern Munich have won the German Bundesliga since 2011/12, but Xabi Alonso is closing in on a great success in his early managerial career.
His stellar season in charge of Bayer Leverkusen brought him the most attention across Europe and he has recently been the favorite to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool following his departure at the end of the season.
However, much to the delight of Bayer Leverkusen fans, Alonso put the rumors to bed and confirmed that he will remain as coach of the German club next season.
When can Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga?
Bayer Leverkusen have only dropped points on four occasions this season and their recent 2-1 win over Hoffenheim on March 30 saw them score 73 points, the 2nd-highest total at this stage of the Bundesliga season.
The only team to surpass that feat was Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in 2013/14, who amassed 77 points in 27 games to eventually secure the title.
After Bayern’s 2-0 defeat by Borussia Dortmund on March 30, the gap to the league leaders widened to 13 points. In the history of the Bundesliga, no team with such a significant lead at the top has managed to lift the trophy at the end of the season.
Bayern’s 11-year dominance appears to be over. With 7 games remaining, the earliest possible date for the title would be Game Day 29 (12/13/14). For that to happen, Bayer Leverkusen would need wins against Union Berlin and Werder Bremen, while Bayern Munich would have to suffer defeats against both Heidenheim and Cologne.
