Alexis Mac Allister scored the decisive goal that helped Liverpool return to the top of the Premier League and eased nerves from an early wobble in the title race.
Liverpool quickly found their feet, however, with the balls wide open in their main output early on, while Mo Salah almost grabbed the opener with an attempted chip past Ivo Grbic.
It soon became clear why Sheffield United struggled so often and a mistake from Grbic, who kicked a clearance straight at the pressing Darwin Nunez with the rebound going straight to make it 1-0, summed it up.
Likewise, Liverpool showed why they are increasingly seen as title favorites, with a string of chances that should have extended their lead.
The hosts finished the half with 83 percent of possession, but the scoreline did not yet reflect that against a team that had conceded 77 goals in their previous 29 league games.
