Lionel Messi will lead Argentina at Copa America 2024 as the team announced their provisional squad for the tournament ahead of their friendlies.

Argentina, who enter the Copa America 2024 as the defending champions, will open the tournament against Ecuador and face Guatemala on June 14. The 29-man squad will eventually be reduced to 26 after the matches, with tournament organizers CONMEBOL expanding the squad from 23 to 26 this month.

In the final year of the tournament, Lionel Messi won his 1st international trophy with Argentina, defeating arch-rivals Brazil 1-0 in the final. That match’s goalscorer, Di Maria, also made the list despite now being 36.

The squad features three league winners, Julian Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez, and Exequiel Palacios, who have won the top division in three different countries, England (Manchester City), Italy (Inter Milan), and Germany (Bayer Leverkusen).

Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup after struggling with a hamstring strain last month, has hinted he will want to continue “delivering” for his country at the continental tournament.
