The three-time Euro winners Germany have suffered several major tournament disappointments in recent years and are looking to turn things around on home soil.

Germany has had some difficult years. Back-to-back World Cup group stage exits saw them lose to England in the last 16 at UEFA Euro 2020, so fans head into UEFA Euro 2024 with the hope rather than expectation of the hosts pulling off a deep upset.

Joachim Low and Hansi Flick paid for the team’s poor form with their work and interim boss Julian Nagelsmann’s reign also got off to a rocky start, with losses to Turkey and Austria. But things have since turned around and Toni Kroos’ return to the fold produced a duo of memorable friendlies against France and the Netherlands. Suddenly things are looking up.

Although they will be backed by a home crowd this summer, group games against Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland are unlikely to be straightforward for Nagelsmann’s inconsistent side, and the former Bayern Munich coach has begun making moves to give himself more options to choose from once the tournament gets underway.
