PSG lost 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final last Wednesday, but that does not mean they will go all out to score twice in the second leg, manager Luis Enrique said on Monday.
The Ligue 1 champions overcame a one-goal deficit against Barcelona in the quarter-finals to win 4-1 in the 2nd leg, but PSG are ready to take their match against Borussia Dortmund to extra time if necessary.
“The goal is not to win by two goals, but to win, if you think you have to score two goals, it seems like a big goal,” Luis Enrique told a news conference ahead of Tuesday’s game in Paris.
“We just want to play and score. If we score in the 89th minute, it will continue. We don’t need to score now, we want to win the game.”
The Spaniard wants his team to focus on all aspects of their game, not just attacking, and a goal from the Germans will not be the end of the world.
“Within two minutes you could score twice, but you could also concede a goal,” he added.
“We have to focus 100% on attack and defense. If we concede a goal, it’s nothing serious, we have to stay calm. If we score twice very quickly, the opponents will have to react.”
“It will be an even game with a high level of play on and off the ball, so it will be tough for both teams.”
Since last week’s loss, Luis Enrique has declared on more than one occasion that PSG will win the second leg, saying: “That’s the only phrase I know in French, ‘on va gagner’ we will win.
“It’s a line I like and I always think my team is going to win, so I say it.
PSG have a home advantage in the second leg and Luis Enrique has no doubts that the Parc des Princes will once again be his team’s driving force.
“I think the role of the fans will be vital, as they have been all season,” the manager said.
“We have a guarantee that the fans will be fully behind us like they have been all year, especially when we need them, and that’s not a normal thing.
“We will all be together and I hope we can celebrate the victory and progress to the final.”
