Bayer Leverkusen’s double in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal was the result of the players remaining confident in the team during a dream season, says Xabi Alonso.

Bayer Leverkusen added the Pokal to their Bundesliga tally with a 1-0 victory over 2nd-division side Kaiserslautern.

Granit Xhaka scored the game’s only goal when he slotted home from distance in the 16th minute.

“In the end to win like that meant we showed spirit, we fought for the fans for the club,” Alonso said.

“Winning the double is a huge achievement. We will remember it in the future.”

Bayer Leverkusen have lost just one of 53 games across all competitions this season, with the only defeat coming in Wednesday’s Europa League final against Atalanta to deny them a treble.

“The most important thing was the belief of the team. They were ready to fight with 10 players and I’m proud of that,” Alonso said.

“I need time to accept what happened this season. It was a dream season, and celebrating the last day like this is special.

Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to build on their success next season, with Alonso beating off advances from Liverpool and Bayern Munich to stay at the club.
