England struggled to a 1-1 draw with an impressive Denmark side, leaving Gareth Southgate facing serious questions over his side’s chances of going far at UEFA EURO 2024.
Denmark had a first-half chance to get off to an even start, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg firing straight at Jordan Pickford from the outside after Rasmus Højlund had leveled him.
Phil Foden had England’s first pass when he received the ball from Kyle Walker and slotted past the Danish defender. Unfortunately for him, his curling shot went high over Kasper Schmeichel’s goal.
England took the lead in the 18th minute through Harry Kane. Victor Kristiansen made a mess of the ball and allowed Kyle Walker to lay in a low cross which eventually found its way to the captain for a simple finish.
Despite falling behind, the Danes responded very well, passing crisply and looking threatening whenever they pushed forward.
They got the goal they deserved with their play, Morten Hjulmand profiting from Kane’s errant pass to fire a brilliant strike past Jordan Pickford from 25 yards. It was the Sporting midfielder’s first goal for his country.
Denmark finished the half the stronger side with Højbjerg and Højlund combining again to test Pickford’s gloves.
England’s pace of play did not pick up to start the second half, with Trent Alexander-Arnold bursting from midfield which ultimately led to nothing of substance.
Foden, who switched from the left wing, almost put England back in front in the 55th minute with a ferocious low drive that hit Schmeichel’s post.
The Man City midfielder, Kane and Saka were subsequently substituted while Gareth Southgate rolled the dice by bringing on Eberechi Eze, Ollie Watkins and Jarrod Bowen.
Watkins made an almost immediate impact, latching on to Jude Bellingham’s ball. However, Schmeichel stopped him.
However, England continued to be second best in most respects with Højbjerg almost hitting the back of the net again as Pickford should not have.
Denmark were the better team and may be disappointed not to win, but they will not face Serbia, who are certain to qualify for the knockout stages.
