Italy broke Croatia’s hearts with a goal in the last minute of stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw and leapfrog them into second place in the group.
Gianluigi Donnarumma was soon called into action, the 25-year-old stopper made a great save with a great shot from outside, hitting Luka Sučić exactly at the corner.
Italy really should have taken the lead when Alessandro Bastoni headed straight at Dominik Livaković from point-blank range with an inch-perfect cross delivered by Nicolò Barella.
Just after half-time, a crazy few minutes began when Croatia were awarded a penalty for David Frattesi’s ball. Luka Modrić was denied by a great save from Gianluigi Donnarumma. Almost immediately afterward, the PSG keeper made another great save from Ante Budimir, only for star Modrić to make a mistake on the rebound.
With Italy now eyeing third place, Bastoni again found himself in a great position to score with a header, but again it went over the bar.
That was a poor performance from the Azzurri and a ball across the box that was missed by forward Gianluca Scamacca had boss Luciano Spalletti head in his hands.
And just as Croatia pushed for a second, Italy scored with almost the last kick of the game, in the last minute of stoppage time thanks to Mattia Zaccagni’s superb curling finish.
