Didier Deschamps said France will take it day by day when it comes to Kylian Mbappe’s recovery, but confirmed the forward will require surgery. Kylian Mbappe broke his nose during France’s UEFA Euro 2024 win over Austria on Monday.
The 25-year-old, who will officially join Real Madrid in July, is said to be out of action against the Netherlands on Friday and France have not given a timetable for his return, which could mean he misses the rest of the group stage altogether.
In an interview published on Tuesday on France’s official Twitter account, Deschamps said: “There will still be tests tomorrow to make sure we see how things develop.
“The paramedics did what was necessary to reduce it as much as possible. Although it won’t be right away, he will have to have surgery.
“He was a bit better already this morning so we’ll see and we’ll keep a close eye on it every day.”
French Football Federation (FFF) president Philippe Diallo was equally cautious.
“The initial reactions have been quite positive as no surgery is planned at the moment,” he told reporters.
“It is too early to know whether he will be able to play for the rest of the tournament or to provide a timetable for his situation.”
“Obviously some medical tests were carried out at the scene to find out more about Kylian’s nose and they came to some conclusions quite quickly.
“They tried to limit the effects of his fracture so he could stay in the tournament.
“As I said, there is no surgery planned at this time and we are still waiting to see how things develop later to learn more about his conditions for the rest of the tournament.”
