Poland vs Netherlands Player ratings as Weghorst the hero in comeback win for Netherlands

The Netherlands came from behind to beat Poland and open their UEFA Euro 2024 campaign with a 2-1 victory in Hamburg.

Substitute Wout Weghorst completed the turnaround for the Oranje late on when he fell behind Adam Buksa’s early effort.

The Poles settled quicker than their opponents and took the lead in the 16th minute when Buska rose highest to meet Piotr Zielinski’s cross into the box, the third straight goal the Netherlands had conceded from a corner, as many as in the previous 83. conceded goals.

Despite record top scorer Robert Lewandowski watching from the bench, he would have been delighted to start his side in the match as they look to secure their first win over their rivals since 1980.

But Gakpo drew the Netherlands level with the help of a deflection from Bartosz Salamon and his effort deflected over a helpless Wojciech Szczesny.

The two sides continued to trade blows in search of an important three points ahead of France’s meeting with Austria in Düsseldorf on Monday.

But with seven minutes remaining, Weghorst emerged from the bench to score his seventh goal in his last 11 internationals. Finished smartly after being picked out by Nathan Ake in the box.
