Galatasaray crash out of UEFA Champions League as Young Boys progress
Galatasaray were eliminated from UEFA Champions League qualification on Tuesday after a 1-0 defeat to Young Boys in the second leg of their play-off tie. The Swiss side secured a 2-0 aggregate victory, securing their place in the upcoming 36-team competition.
The Young Boys carried over a slight advantage from the first game in Switzerland and confirmed their move to the new 36-team competition with success in the play-offs.
Alan Virginius scored the only goal in the 87th minute before Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was sent off for kicking a Young Boys substitute as he celebrated.
RB Salzburg are also looking to make their sixth successive start in Europe’s top club competition after a 1-1 draw at home to Dynamo Kyiv ended in a 3-1 draw.
Adam Daghim struck for the home side after just 12 minutes before Vladyslav Vanat equalized for Kyiv, who failed to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit.
Sparta Prague were the other side to qualify on Tuesday thanks to a 2-0 win over Sweden’s Malmö to complete a 4-0 aggregate triumph for the Czech champions.
Anders Christiansen missed a first-half penalty for Malmö before Lukas Haraslin sealed progress with a free-kick goal for Albion Rrahmani.
On Wednesday, four more teams will fight for a place in the group stage of the Champions League.
