Newcastle United Reignites Interest in Barcelona’s Christensen Amid Defensive Woes
Newcastle United are reportedly back in the hunt for Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen as they scramble to bolster their defensive options before the summer transfer window slams shut. The Magpies have faced stiff resistance in their pursuit of Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, with four bids already rejected.
With time running out, manager Eddie Howe is exploring alternative targets, and Christensen has emerged as a potential solution. The Danish international was previously on Newcastle’s radar earlier this summer but was deemed unattainable. However, his recent omission from Barcelona’s starting lineup has piqued the Premier League club’s interest once again.
New manager Hansi Flick has favored Inigo Martinez alongside Pau Cubarsi at the back and has even opted for young duo Marc Bernal and Marc Casado in midfield, despite reports suggesting the 28-year-old’s future under Flick may lie higher up the pitch.
Christensen’s insult comes at a time when many of his rivals are sidelined through injury, with Barcelona having Ronald Araujo, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi to finally welcome back, raising questions about Christensen’s future in the squad.
Having joined on a free transfer from Chelsea two years ago, the sale of Christensen would generate a net profit for cash-strapped Barcelona, who would also benefit from clearing their wage bill.
However, it is unclear whether Christensen wants to leave or is even interested in a move to Newcastle. The transfer window in both the Premier League and La Liga closes on August 30.
