Lunin Commits to Madrid, Impacting Chelsea’s Plans
Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has agreed to a long-term contract extension with the Spanish club, ending speculation about his future. The Ukrainian shot-stopper, who has been a reliable backup to Thibaut Courtois, had been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabéu due to limited playing time.
When the Belgian was injured last summer, Lunin battled competition from Kepa Arrizabalaga and made 31 appearances in all competitions, but was knocked out in the UEFA Champions League final following Courtois’ return.
A move away from the club did not materialize this year, but rather than see his contract expire, Lunin has now agreed a new four-year deal.
Lunin put renewal talks on hold over the summer amid concerns about his long-term role in the team, but appears to have been convinced to stay and continue his battle with Courtois, who has started every game this season.
It should be noted that Lunin could still be sold in 2025 should a tempting offer come in, but for now the Ukraine international is focused on adding to his 48 caps for the club.
News of Lunin’s extension could have a significant impact on Chelsea, who welcomed Kepa back this summer after his loan expired.
Kepa wanted to return to Madrid this summer and the Spanish side were happy to try to do a deal should Lunin leave. When no offer came in, Kepa signed a new one-year deal and joined Bournemouth on loan for the rest of the season.
