French sports daily L’Équipe have confirmed that Barcelona’s France international winger Ousmane Dembélé will receive a big cut in the fee associated with his proposed move from La Liga to PSG.
The 26-year-old signed a two-year contract extension with the Spanish club last summer, but the deal included a clause that would have reduced his release clause to just €50m this July – a big discount considering what Barcelona paid Borussia Dortmund euros. 135 million for his services in 2017 after Neymar’s departure to Paris.
Worse for Barca, as reported in Spain, unable to afford a loyalty bonus at the time of the former Rennes striker’s extension, it was agreed that Dembélé and his agents would take 50% of any subsequent transfer fee. Although according to some reports, PSG are trying to meet the deadline of the end of July to inform the Spanish club they will activate this clause (today at midnight), as it stands, Barcelona would only receive 25 million euros for the player, the other 25 million euros paid to Dembélé and his representatives.
In fact, Barcelona could lose over €100 million per player if the deal goes through. However, if PSG misses this deadline, the release clause will increase substantially again.
The striker’s lack of a definitive yes to a move today could also become an issue after Dembélé met Barcelona coach Xavi this weekend to discuss his future. However, a move is expected soon, with L’Équipe reporting that the move is “very close”.
