Lionel Messi scored twice to increase his MLS-leading total to seven and also had an assist to lead Inter Miami over Nashville SC 3-1 on Saturday night.
Nashville SC took an early 1-0 lead with an own goal, but Lionel Messi scored his first goal a few minutes later. His initial attempt at goal was saved, but the ball would come back to him and he would collect the rebound and score to equalize for Inter Miami.
Corner kick for Inter Miami and Lionel Messi would take it, his cross in the penalty area found Sergio Busquets and he scored to give Inter a 2-1 lead. But Messi had one more goal.
Inter Miami were awarded a penalty kick and the Argentinian stepped up to score to give Inter a 3-1 lead. Lionel Messi’s penalty was his first in regulation 90 minutes after scoring against Hugo Llorris for Argentina in the FIFA 2022 World Cup final.
He now has 20 goals for Inter Miami, nine shy of Gonzalo Higuain’s club record of 29 goals. Lionel Messi has nine goals and five assists in nine games for Inter Miami this season.
